Hosting a business website on AWS: responsibilities and architecture

AWS website hosting is a set of architecture choices rather than one interchangeable hosting package. Make 4 decisions first: whether the site is static or server-based, where HTTPS is handled, who operates the application and how recovery works. Choose the services from those requirements. A cloud account and a running homepage do not establish a complete operating service.

For a business comparing AWS with ordinary managed hosting, the main question is responsibility. Some services manage more of the infrastructure, while a virtual server leaves more operating work with the customer. This article explains those boundaries without quoting public prices or assuming that an unused free allowance makes an ongoing business site costless.

Which hosting pattern fits the website?

Amazon’s S3 website-hosting guide distinguishes static content and recommends Amplify Hosting as a managed way to serve suitable content from S3 through a content delivery network. AWS’s shared-responsibility model explains that customer responsibilities vary with the services selected. Keep both the technical fit and the operating boundary in the decision.

Website requirement Architecture to investigate Responsibility that remains important
Static pages and assets Managed static hosting or an appropriate storage-and-delivery setup Content, domain configuration and deployment checks
Server-rendered application A runtime and deployment service appropriate to the application Application configuration, dependencies and data
Software requiring a server A supported virtual-server architecture Guest operating system, web server and application maintenance
Existing business website A migration matching its actual runtime and integrations Data transfer, URL behaviour and continuity checks

The table describes patterns rather than claiming every service supports every runtime. A static site may contain browser-side scripts, but that does not make it a host for arbitrary server-side software. Identify where forms, authentication and data processing happen before treating a static deployment as the whole system.

If the site uses WordPress or another application with a database, inventory the runtime, database, uploaded files and scheduled work. Copying the visible pages into a storage bucket will not recreate those functions. The appropriate hosting choice follows the application requirements and the people available to operate them.

How does the shared-responsibility model affect the business?

AWS explains the distinction between security of its cloud infrastructure and customer responsibility within the selected services. For an EC2-style infrastructure service, that includes guest operating-system and application work. Do not assume that the cloud provider patches your installed website software merely because it maintains the underlying infrastructure.

Assign ownership for application updates, access, backups, monitoring and incident response. These jobs may be performed by different people, but none should be left implicit. A technically capable platform can still host an unreliable service if no one notices a failed deployment or an expired integration credential.

Keep account administration separate from routine content editing. The person updating a service page does not necessarily need broad infrastructure permissions. Use the business’s authorised access process and retain a reliable recovery route. This article does not authorise account or permission changes.

Billing awareness is part of operating responsibility. Identify the services that can incur usage and how the accountable owner will notice changes. Do not invent a monthly estimate from a generic tutorial. The site’s traffic pattern, data transfer, storage, runtime and optional integrations determine the relevant exposure.

What should you verify before making the site public?

Start with a diagram of the public request path. Show the domain, delivery layer, application and data store where applicable. The diagram should answer where HTTPS ends, where dynamic requests run and which components are private. If the team cannot explain that route, troubleshooting will become guesswork.

Where HTTPS actually runs

The S3 endpoint reference explicitly states that S3 website endpoints do not support HTTPS or access points. Putting a domain in front of that endpoint does not add encryption. AWS documents Amplify Hosting or CloudFront as delivery alternatives. Distinguish the browser-to-delivery connection from the delivery-to-origin route: a CloudFront viewer certificate does not turn an HTTP website origin into an HTTPS origin.

For a static project, first produce the static build and identify any server-side functions it still needs. Choose the documented Amplify route if its capabilities fit, select the intended S3 content and inspect the generated HTTPS URL. Then configure the intended public hostname through the chosen service’s current instructions and test direct requests to the homepage, deeper paths and missing pages. Keep private material out of the public build. A WordPress PHP/database application needs a different runtime; copying its files into this static route will not execute it.

Test ordinary visitor journeys through the final public hostname. Open deeper pages directly, submit a labelled non-sensitive enquiry and inspect the receiving system. If the application uses client-side navigation, a refresh on an internal route should be part of the check.

Use this original AWS website responsibility ledger:

Component Owner to name Acceptance evidence
Domain and DNS Accountable domain administrator Intended hostname reaches the intended site
Public HTTPS Hosting operator Correct certificate and secure public route
Application Maintainer for the actual software Required pages and workflows operate
Data Accountable data owner and operator Access and recovery requirements documented
Deployment Release owner Reproducible build or installation and rollback route
Monitoring Named responder A defined failure produces a usable signal
Backup Recovery owner A restored copy has been checked
Usage Authorised account owner Selected services and cost controls understood

This ledger is an original planning artefact, not evidence that any AWS account has passed the checks. Adapt it to the chosen services. A static site may not have a database, while a transactional application may need several distinct data and integration responsibilities.

How should backup and migration be approached?

Define what must be recovered before choosing a backup method. Website source, uploaded media, database content and configuration can live in different places. A copy of one component does not establish that the full service can be restored.

Rehearse recovery in an isolated environment appropriate to the system. Verify the recovered content and a representative workflow, then record what was restored and what remained external. A successful backup job is evidence that a job ran; a tested restoration gives stronger evidence about recoverability.

For a migration, preserve the important public URLs and account for external systems such as email and payment services. Moving a website is not permission to change unrelated DNS or mail delivery. Plan the cutover with the actual owners and keep the previous configuration available for an authorised rollback.

Choose AWS when its capabilities and operating model fit the requirement, rather than because a tutorial makes a first deployment look easy. The lasting question is who will keep the real application accurate, secure and recoverable.
